Fredericton bridge to close for maintenance this May

Fredericton drivers will have to find alternate routes in the next few weeks as the Princess Margaret Bridge shuts down for repairs.

The New Brunswick government confirmed in a news release Monday the bridge, a major river crossing in Fredericton, will close to all traffic on May 10 to allow for resurfacing and repairs.

It will be closed for roughly five weeks, according to Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Richard Ames.

“This work is necessary to prevent further deterioration of the bridge surface, which could lead to more significant repairs and costs,” he said.

The work was scheduled for last year but was rescheduled due to a “high volume of construction” taking place downtown.

Officials said asphalt on the bridge has been deteriorating for the past few years. Ames said the work needs to be done to prevent further costly damage to the structure.

Ames urged residents to stay patient while this work gets underway.

“Motorists and residents are strongly encouraged to consider alternatives such as walking, biking, carpooling or using public transit; working from home, if able; and completing errands outside of heavy-traffic times,” he said.
