Fredericton police note rise in vehicle theft, impaired driving

Fredericton police have reported 38 instances of vehicles theft during the first quarter of 2024, representing a 36 per cent increase over the same period in 2023.

In a recent social media post, police said there were 114 instances of thefts from vehicles during the first quarter of 2024.

That number, officials said, represents a six per cent decrease over the same period in 2023 and a 23 per cent decrease over the previous quarter.

“Keep your vehicles locked, your keys securely on your person or in your home and conceal any valuables to discourage theft,” the force said in the post.

Meanwhile, Fredericton police said 40 people have been charged with impaired driving in the first quarter of 2024, a nine per cent increase as compared to the first quarter of 2023, but a 13 per cent decrease over the previous quarter of 2023.

Those who see a possibly impaired driver should contact 911.

“Fredericton Police Force members continue to work with community partners to raise awareness and educate the public on the dangers of driving impaired,” police said.

“Impaired driving is a leading criminal cause of death in Canada and is still one of the top five causes of motor vehicle collisions.”
