A pair of teenagers were arrested by Saint John police this week after allegedly assaulting another teen with a “chemical irritant.”
Police said in a news release officers were called around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday to an alleged assault in the 500-block of Westmorland Road.
Officers at the scene found a 19-year-old man that had been “contaminated with a chemical irritant.”
“He was treated for non-life-threatening injuries at scene and released,” the force said Thursday.
“Additional officers searched the area and subsequently arrested two youths in a nearby neighbourhood.”
Police said a 16-year-old youth, whose gender was not disclosed, was released on an undertaking to appear in court on July 24, 2024.
A 15-year-old youth, whose gender also wasn’t disclosed by police, has been charged with breach of a court order.
The identities of both suspects won’t be released due to protections imposed by Canada’s Youth Criminal Justice Act.
“A cornerstone of youth justice in Canada is that, as a general rule, the identity of a young person should be protected,” the act reads.
“Publication of a young person’s name would impede rehabilitation efforts, detrimentally affect the young person and … compromise public safety.”
