Sussex RCMP officer dragged by vehicle while responding to driving complaint

A 23-year-old man from Sussex, N.B., has been charged after allegedly assaulting a local RCMP officer last week.

Mounties received a driving complaint around 2 p.m. on April 11 regarding a vehicle near Court Street in Sussex.

Police stopped the vehicle and identified the driver as a 23-year-old man from Sussex.

Officers also found what they believed to be crystal meth in the vehicle, and arrested the man.

“As the officer was trying to remove the driver from the car, the driver resisted, started the vehicle, and quickly accelerated,” the RCMP said in a statement.

“The officer was dragged for approximately 15 – 20 meters before letting go.”

Police said the officer suffered minor injuries during the incident, and the driver fled from police.

Mounties found the man the next day.

Colton Bernard, 23, of Sussex, appeared in Saint John Provincial Court on April 15 and was charged with resisting a peace officer, assault on a police officer, flight from police, and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

He was released on conditions and is scheduled to return to court on May 13.
