Man found guilty on child porn charges sentenced to seven years

A man who pleaded guilty to 23 charges related to child pornography earlier this year has been sentenced to seven years in prison.

Michael Sorenson, of Noonan, N.B., appeared in Fredericton Provincial Court on Feb. 24, where he pleaded guilty to several counts of voyeurism, making and possessing child pornography, sexual exploitation, sexual touching, sexual interference, and sexual assault.

Police said the charges against Sorenson stemmed from incidents they believe occurred between 2008 and 2020, involving several identified victims as well as unknown victims.

The New Brunswick RCMP arrested Sorenson in the fall of 2021 while investigating sexual exploitation.

Mounties said he owned a petting zoo and would travel to different events, hiring locals who stayed with him at hotels. Police identified several New Brunswick victims at the time of Sorenson’s arrest and were actively investigating to identify other potential victims.

The 40-year-old returned to court on Sept. 29, where he was sentenced to seven years of prison time.

“Upon his release, he will be ordered to register with the National Sex Offender Registry, will be subject to a DNA order, and will have to abide by strict conditions set out by the court,” said New Brunswick RCMP Cpl. Hans Ouellette in a statement.
