A nursing home in Miramichi is preparing to add 30 new beds by this fall, officials announced Thursday.
The new beds for Mount Saint Joseph Nursing Home were approved by Social Development in the 2018-2023 Nursing Home Plan.
“Nursing homes, and the care received there, are important pieces of the provincial long-term care sector,” said Réjean Savoie, minister responsible for the Regional Development Corporation.
“A traditional build can take approximately three years.”
The province said the beds, once fully operational, will be on the third floor of Mount Saint Joseph.
Nursing home director Mike Kingston said the additional beds will help tackle the growing number of seniors taking up long-term space in hospitals.
Overall, he said, it will provide better access to nursing home care in Miramichi.
“We thank the Department of Social Development for their dedication to the seniors in New Brunswick,” said Kingston.
Savoie said the beds are expected to open this fall.
