One of the most popular night spots in Saint John has officially shut down after more than 20 years, its owner said Sunday.
Corey McGill, owner of McGill’s on the Market Square boardwalk in the city’s uptown, announced “with profound disappointment” on social media that the bar would close immediately.
“This decision does not come lightly,” he said in a Facebook post.
“We have done as much as we could to keep the business viable for the last three and a half years. From pandemic lockdowns to operating in a construction site for close to two years now, we faced many challenges that compromised the business.”
The restaurant opened in uptown Saint John in 2002.
McGill said staff can’t continue to operate while waiting for the end of the construction project and have made this difficult and sad decision to close the business.
He thanked current and former team members who worked in this location over the years.
“To the guests and regulars: you were the reason we opened every day,” said McGill.
“The relationships that have grown over the years mean so much to both me and my family.”
Really sad to see a business close for reason beyond their control!
