First responder summer camp comes to Saint John

Officials from the City of Saint John hope a new interactive camp will inspire young, gender-diverse women and teens to pursue careers as first responders.

In partnership with Saint John Fire, the Saint John Police Force and Ambulance New Brunswick, Camp Courage aims to inspire youth between 15 and 19 years of age to achieve their goals and introduce them to careers like a paramedic, police officer and firefighter.

“Camp participants will take part in hands-on exercises and training, coaching on preparing for fitness requirements for these fields and hear from other females that have chosen a profession in emergency services,” reads a statement about the camp.

Officials say this year marks the first time the camp will be hosted in Saint John after being held in Halifax and Calgary since 2006.

The city says the inaugural New Brunswick Camp Courage will take place in Saint John from Aug. 28 to 31 and is open to anyone living in the province. Applications are being accepted until June 25.
