New Brunswickers in the market for new furniture should be aware of an online scam that has recently been making the rounds in Saint Andrews.
This latest scam has prompted an investigation by the New Brunswick RCMP, which has already received several complaints from residents who say they lost money to the scammers over the last three weeks.
Mounties say the scam has been circulating buy-and-sell pages on social media.
“The seller identifies as a female and is selling various household furniture items ranging in value from $150 to $450,” said Saint Andrews RCMP Cpl. Jayson Hansen in a news release.
“The seller asks victims to pay for items in advance and provides real addresses of uninvolved persons.”
Investigators say once buyers send the money and try to arrange pick-up, the seller, who has gone by the names Paige Kenny and Kathleen Bird, stops responding to all communication.
Mounties are now asking other potential victims to report the scam to their local police and the social media platform they use. Victims should also notify their banks if a fraudulent sale or transaction is suspected.
Anyone with information that could help further the investigation, or who has had dealings with this seller, is asked to contact the Saint Andrews RCMP or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
