Man Detained In Mexico For Former N.B. Woman’s Suspected Homicide

VANCOUVER — Mexico authorities have detained a Canadian man in connection to the suspected homicide of a 23-year-old former New Brunswicker.

Staff at a resort hotel in Playa del Carmen, south of Cancun, found Kiara Agnew, of Dawson Creek, B.C., dead in her room.

According to a GoFundMe set up by Agnew’s family, the 23-year-old had been with her boyfriend on what the family called a “dream birthday vacation” — a dream that “turned into a nightmare” when relatives learned of her death.

Agnew grew up in Plaster Rock, N.B., before moving to Dawson Creek, B.C. as a teenager.

In a tweet by Seguridad Pública Solidaridad, a Mexican police force, law enforcement said in Spanish that a “foreign national” is being investigated for femicide.

The man remains in custody, police said, and possible charges are being considered.
