Alleged Attack On Russian Embassy Prompts Investigation

Russia claims someone allegedly attacked its embassy in Ottawa, Ont. earlier this month, prompting an investigation by the RCMP.

The country’s ambassador to Canada, Oleg Stepanov, said yesterday someone had thrown a Molotov cocktail at the embassy. He said the weapon did not ignite, adding that no one was hurt.

Mounties say officers attended the embassy to obtain relevant information for the investigation. The force’s national division is responsible for protecting foreign diplomatic properties.

Russia’s foreign ministry registered its frustration with Stepanov yesterday about the RCMP’s response to the incident.

Moscow also claims police turned a blind eye to “aggressive demonstrators” blocking public access to the embassy’s consular section.
